ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Students who complete this certificate will be able to enter English speaking schools/universities, in addition to bettering their working environment through written and spoken English.

This course is intended to build confidence to non-native speakers of English. It begins with survival English, and teaches students how to manage themselves on a daily basis. This type of English is mainly memorized and set. In order to communicate effectively, the students are taught how to converse without using set phrases. Pronunciation drills are introduced and are implemented. It is also the intention of this course to incorporate vocabulary expansion, as well as concentrating on the three simple tenses; present, past, and future and there usage.
In ESL 100, the introduction to the three simple tenses was introduced. In this course the students will use and incorporate what they have learned in ESL 100. Vocabulary expansion continues as is writing and pronunciation.
This course is designed such that the students are exposed to short dialogues. These dialogues are used for pronunciation practice, vocabulary expansion, and reading comprehension. After each assigned topic, the students will incorporate what they have learned through role playing.
It is the intention of this course to familiarize the student in language that is associated with meetings. In addition, the course is designed to introduce the student to write short business memos, business letters, and give presentations. The student is exposed to all elements of the English language; reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It is the intention of this course to enhance the student's overall performance in an office environment.
This course is intended to broaden the students' ability to converse with others. The students are exposed to reading newspaper articles through use of the Internet. Students are given the topics and are then asked questions based on the articles. This increases the students' comprehension, vocabulary and conversational topics. The students will also be exposed to more advanced grammar such as; perfect and continuous tenses.
This course is designed to introduce the students to a variety of speaking styles. It is also the intention of this course to expose the students to the American culture and have them to compare and contrast those to that of the American to that of their own country.
The course is intended to sharpen and teach clarity and accuracy in written form, as well as legibility, paragraphing and use of margins. Writing paragraphs accurate in simple, present, past, future, and present continuous are reinforced throughout the course. In addition, emphasis will also be placed on comprehension of reading passages through oral and written responses stimulating discussion.
This course is intended to introduce the tools needed for longer pieces of written work. Students will be working with outlines, rough drafts, essays, and research projects.
It is the intention of this course to introduce the necessary tools needed when giving presentations, as well as applying them.
It is the intention of this course to identify the different speaking styles depending on the needs of the speaker and/or the audiences' interest. These styles include the following; debate, one sided and two sided approaches, descriptive, demonstrative, original oratorical, and impromptu. The students are assigned topics to be no longer than 3-5 minutes at length, the length will increase as the styles become more advanced. These presentations will then be evaluated based on the following; content, delivery, presentation, interest, eye contact and posture.
